Back in October, we talked about the difficulties Northern communities experience trying to access vet care, and how this affects the overpopulation of dogs. This remains an uphill battle because of just how isolated these communities are; in fact, many are only accessible by small aircraft.
For this reason, Dr Pauline Van Veen and Dr Andrea Pang led another spay and neuter clinic, this time in Deer Lake, ON, from November 22nd-27th (this includes over 18 hours of travel time each way).
Accompanied by vet techs Amy Richardson and Amanda Adamiak, along with vet tech student Mercedes Barrow and volunteers Mary Smith and Heather Watling, Drs Van Veen and Pang were able to perform 44 spay/neuter surgeries and vaccinate 76 dogs! Pauline also did some Vet 101 education with a visiting grade 8 class. Their hosts, Jill and Lloyd, along with their daughters, were fantastic advocates for the clinic, encouraging residents of this widespread community to bring in their dogs for surgery, immunizations, and general health care. They also spoiled the FTH team with home cooked meals, blueberry jam and bannock bread. We can’t say enough about Northern Hospitality!
On the journey home, our volunteers brought a total of 37 dogs with them for foster care and eventual adoption.
As we continue our fight against canine overpopulation in the Northern communities, these clinics become our primary battle strategy. They give us the opportunity not only to physically prevent many of these dogs from adding to the overpopulation problem, but also to educate the local communities about the importance of spaying and neutering their pets. Without being able to physically reach these communities, we have no way of sharing our knowledge and resources.
It’s with the help of you, our supporters, that we are able to continue making these trips North to perform these clinics. We can’t thank you enough for helping us make a difference in Northern communities. You make all of this possible!
From all of us at FTH, thank you for supporting our shared mission!
